Each year the group participates in the Sustainable Palm Oil Transparency Toolkit (“SPOTT”) assessment by the Zoological Society of London (“ZSL”). SPOTT assesses palm oil producers, processors and traders on the transparency of their disclosures regarding policies, operations and commitments to environmental, social and governance best practice.

To incentivise implementation of best practice, companies are assessed on:

  • Sustainability, policy and leadership
  • Landbank, maps and traceability
  • Deforestation and biodiversity
  • HCV, HCS and impact assessments
  • Peat, fire and GHG emissions
  • Water, chemical and pest management
  • Community, land and labour rights
  • Certification standards
  • Smallholders and suppliers
  • Governance and grievances.

Whilst the number of assessment categories, indicators and companies changes each year, the overall SPOTT score comprises three categories of disclosure:

  • Organisation regarding the operations, assets and management structure
  • Policy regarding the policies, commitments and processes that guide the operations
  • Practice regarding activities undertaken to actively progress towards targets and implement policies and commitments.

REA scored 75.7% in October 2019, ranking 8th out of 99 companies assessed. By comparison, in 2018 REA scored 70%, ranking 19th out of 70 participating companies, and in 2017 scored 67%, ranking 16th out of 50 participating companies.
