Each year the group participates in the Sustainable Palm Oil Transparency Toolkit (SPOTT) assessment by the Zoological Society of London (ZSL).  SPOTT assesses palm oil producers, processors and traders on the transparency of their disclosures regarding policies, operations and commitments to environmental, social and governance (ESG) best practice.

The overall SPOTT score comprises 3 disclosure types, within which the number of assessment categories, indicators and companies changes each year:

  • Organisation regarding the operations, assets and management structure
  • Policy regarding the policies, commitments and processes that guide the operations and practices
  • Practice regarding activities undertaken to actively progress towards targets and implementation of policies and commitments.

The 2020 assessments included 180 ESG indicators across 10 categories:

  • Sustainability, policy and leadership
  • Landbank, maps and traceability
  • Certification standards
  • Deforestation and biodiversity
  • HCV, HCS and impact assessments
  • Peat, fire and GHG emissions
  • Water, chemical and pest management
  • Community, land and labour rights
  • Smallholders and suppliers
  • Governance and grievances.

In the 2020 assessment, REA scored 79.8% , increased from 75.7% in 2019 and compared with an average score of 41.5% for the 100 palm oil companies assessed.
