On the 16 April 2015, REA’s pioneering collaboration with the Indonesian national electricity company, PLN, came to fruition when the group’s methane capture plants started to supply renewable electricity to local villages. To achieve this, REA has installed the gas engines necessary to generate an additional three megawatts of power, and PLN has installed the infrastructure necessary to connect the villages to this power supply. This collaboration will result in 21 villages, comprising some 8,500 households, having access to a reliable source of green electricity. This includes 15 villages that were not already connected to PLN’s existing transmission line in the area, which previously supplied electricity produced from diesel powered generators.  This collaboration will bring material long term benefits for the socio-economic status of these communities and the environment.
